The Alexander clan has its roots in the ancient Dalriadan clans of western Scotland and the Hebrides. The surname derives from the Greek name Alexander, meaning “defender of men.” It was introduced to Scotland in the 11th century by Queen Margaret and later rose in prominence after being borne by several Scottish kings, beginning with the son of Malcolm III.
